What is ceramic fiber

Ceramic fiber refers to a fiber having a ceramic chemical composition. Ceramic fiber is an important variety of advanced composite materials and high-performance reinforcing fibers.

Ceramic fiber is a fibrous lightweight refractory material with high temperature resistance, light weight, low thermal conductivity, good thermal stability, low specific heat and mechanical vibration resistance. Ceramic fiber is widely used in machinery, chemical, petroleum, metallurgy, transportation, shipbuilding, electronics and light industry sectors. Ceramic fibers are also increasingly used in cutting-edge sciences such as aerospace and atomic energy, and have broad prospects for development.

Ceramic fibers can be classified into oxide and non-oxide systems according to their composition.

The oxide system mainly includes alumina, zirconia, cerium oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium oxide, and so on.

The non-oxide system mainly includes silicon carbide, boron nitride, titanium diboride fiber, boron fiber, and carbon (graphite) fiber.

Ceramic fibers can be used to reinforce metals, toughened ceramics, and reinforced resins.

Ceramic fiber started late in China, but its development has been rapid, its production capacity has been increasing, and its productization has been realized very quickly. At present, China has developed into a major producer of ceramic fiber.
